On Monday night, February 4, 2002 the Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA) held their Legislative Conference Annual Banquet at the Ramada Inn in Tallahassee, FL. The ballroom was packed with ARA Board Members and State ARA Leaders. National ARA Leaders from Washington, DC, Ed Coyle, Executive Director and Jake Sweeney, ARA Mobilization Director were also in attendance. Our own, J.W. Strickland who is the AFL-CIO Retiree Coordinator for West Central FL , IBEW LU 108 ARA President, and State ARA Board Member was presented with a beautiful plaque by Tony Fransetta, President of the Florida ARA. The plaque was a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition and appreciation for his many years of service to the retirees, social issues of working families and labor unions throughout the state of Florida. J.W. and his lovely wife Margie were given a standing ovation and pictures were taken with State and National Labor Union officials, State and National Retiree Coordinators and Board Members. J.W. stated that this is "an award that I am most humbled to receive on behalf of all union retirees in Florida."

In the near future the IBEW 108 Retiree Group will be meeting to formulate an agenda for 2002. The immediate goals of the ARA are to address the escalating costs of prescription drugs and to improve the quality of nursing home care throughout the state. During this very important election year, the retiree groups can be instrumental in educating union voters as to the issues that we need to be fighting for. Any retirees interested in volunteering some time to make a difference in everyone's future throughout the state of Florida, please contact the union hall for more information. This IBEW 108 Retiree Group can be a great social club that can also accomplish great things in unity! Keep in mind, membership fees for IBEW Retirees in the IBEW 108 Retiree Group with the ARA have been paid by Local 108, there is no cost to be a member!
